Definition:

Arthritis of the shoulder is a degenerative condition of the articular cartilage or outer covering of the bone and joint.

Causes:

Arthritis of the shoulder is caused by osteoarthritis, which gradually destroys the articular cartilage or outer covering of the bone and joint. Over time, this cartilage becomes worn out and frayed, which may lead to the rubbing of bone on bone in the shoulder joint during activity. Symptoms:
  • Limited range of motion
  • Difficulty with daily activities that may have been done with ease previously
  • Pain affecting different or all parts of the shoulder joint, which may increase or decrease with changes in weather.
Treatment:
  • Rest
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Physical therapy, including range of motion exercises
